8 Tips to make high quality video recordings with Bix

Thursday, August 30th, 2007   |   5 Comments

Video CameraOk, so how many of you have had to re-record your karaoke videos over and over again because it just wasn’t perfect?  Maybe it was the lighting, the sound, or someone bothered you unexpectedly.  Don’t worry; it happens to the best of us. Well, not me of course because I refuse to sing anywhere except for my shower.  Nonetheless, making high quality video recordings at Bix is very easy.  Here are some hints to help you get the best quality video recordings:

  1. Use sufficient light.  Webcams will try to compensate for low light by having long exposure, which causes ghosting, or by pixilation which doesn’t look good either.

  2. Music Merge:  If your sound card provides the Record What You Hear then you can turn off Music Merge and allow your sound card to do the merging.  Bix’s music merge will prevent sounds like You’ve Got Mail from being mixed in but not the sound card. Other microphones are usually better than the microphone in your camera and you should generally avoid using the microphone in your camera.

  3. If you have Windows Vista then use the beta recorder, Windows Vista came out after the default recorder and music merge doesn’t work with the default recorder running on Windows Vista.

  4. Put the camera about eye level close to where you are reading the karaoke lyrics from.

  5. Try to use only one USB device (which is going to be the camera).

  6. Adjust the sound levels for both the Microphone and the music.  If you are using the Beta recorder then adjusting the music can be done from the control itself.

  7. Headphones: Okay, it’t not cool to wear headphones, however, when recording karaoke you should wear headphones, this will prevent the music from coming back in through the microphone and being recorded both through the microphone and merged in.

  8. If you are using sound effects, like reverb, then the music will come back in through the microphone and have this reverb effect as well and will sound bad.

Follow these simple steps and you will be on your way to stardom, guaranteed. Please post any other tips that I may have missed!
